BIDI optical module is a single-fibre bidirectional optical module. It uses WDM technology to transmit and receive center wavelengths in two different directions to achieve bidirectional transmission of optical signals on an optical fiber. Optical modules generally have two ports: transmitting port (TX) and receiving port (RX), while BIDI optical modules have only one port, which is filtered by the filter in the optical module, and at the same time completes the transmission of optical signals of one wavelength and the other. One kind of wavelength optical signal reception (the wavelengths of BIDI optical modules are all combined forms), so BIDI optical modules must be used in pairs, and its biggest advantage is to save fiber resources.
Advantages of BIDI optical module
The most obvious advantage of using BIDI optical modules, such as SFP+ BIDI and SFP BIDI optical modules, lies in reducing the cost of optical fiber cabling infrastructure. The BIDI optical module reduces the number of ports on the fiber patch cord panel, reduces the space occupied by the tray dedicated to fiber management, and reduces the number of optical cables that need to be used.
Although the price of BIDI optical modules (WDM optical modules) is higher than that of traditional dual-fiber bidirectional optical modules, the amount of light used per unit of transmission distance has been reduced by half. For many networks, the cost savings of using fewer fibers far exceeds the relatively high purchase price of dual-fibre bidirectional optical modules.
