Overview of FTTH Optical Network

Optical access network (OAN) is a network form that uses optical fiber as the main transmission medium to realize information transmission in the access network. OAN can be divided into passive optical network (PON) and active optical network (AON). FTTH refers to the extension of ONU (Optical Network Unit) to ordinary residential users. With the continuous development of FTTH, FTTH can not only provide huge access bandwidth, but also integrate data, voice and video into one. From the point of view of network operators, FTTH also enhances the transparency of the physical network to data format, rate, wavelength and protocol, relaxes the requirements for environmental conditions and power supply conditions, thus simplifies maintenance and installation, and reduces the cost of network operation.

Typical networking structure of FTTH

FTTH is a broadband access mode vigorously promoted by China Telecom at present, which can provide home and enterprise customers with broadband services such as voice, data, CATV and IPTV. FTTH is usually implemented in the PON system. Through the dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) function of the PON system, ftth telecom can bring users more high-quality broadband experience and services.
FTTH network consists of three parts: office computer room equipment (OLT), user terminal equipment (ONT) and optical distribution network (ODN). As an important part of FTTH network, ODN is the physical channel of optical transmission between OLT and ONU. It is usually composed of optical fiber cable, optical connector, optical splitter and supporting equipment for installing and connecting these devices. ODN consists of five parts: feeder segment, optical cable distribution point, distribution segment, optical cable access point and home segment. As the key and difficult point of FTTH scale deployment, ODN directly affects the comprehensive cost, system performance and reliability.
