Common SFP Optical Modules

When it comes to SFP optical modules, we are no strangers. SFP is the abbreviation of SMALL FORM PLUGGABLE (small pluggable), which is one of the most commonly used packages for Gigabit Ethernet optical modules and an industry standard for Gigabit Ethernet.


SFP optical module is a compact input/output (I/O) device, which is mainly used in network equipment such as switches and routers in Gigabit Ethernet. It conforms to Fibre Channel (Fibre Channel), Gigabit Ethernet, SONET ( Synchronous fiber network) and other communication standards, can easily realize 1G fiber connection or copper connection between network devices on the basis of the existing network structure.


According to the different types of transmitters and receivers, SFP optical modules can be divided into many types, and their working wavelengths, transmission distances, and suitable applications are different.


1. 1000BASE-T SFP optical module


This SFP optical module adopts RJ45 interface, which is usually used in copper network wiring together with Category 5 network cable, and the transmission distance is up to 100m.


2. 1000Base-SX SFP optical module


The 1000Base-SX SFP optical module adopts a duplex LC interface and conforms to the IEEE 802.3z 1000BASE-SX standard.


Usually used in multimode applications, the transmission distance of 1000Base-SX SFP optical module and traditional 50um multimode fiber is 550m, and the transmission distance of 62.5um multimode fiber is 220m, and the transmission distance of laser optimized 50um multimode fiber is 220m. The transmission distance can reach 1km.


3. 1000BASE-LX/LH SFP optical module


The 1000BASE-LX/LH SFP optical module conforms to the IEEE 802.3z 1000BASE-LX standard and can be used in both single-mode and multi-mode applications. When used with single-mode fiber, the transmission distance can reach 10km. 1000BASE-LX The distance between /LH SFP optical module and multimode fiber is 550m.


It should be noted that when the 1000BASE-LX/LH SFP optical module is used with traditional multimode fiber, the mode conversion jumper should be used at the transmitting end.


4. 1000BASE-EX SFP optical module


1000BASE-EX SFP optical modules are generally used in long-distance single-mode transmission applications, and the transmission distance can reach 40km when used with standard single-mode fibers.


5. 1000BASE-ZX SFP optical module


1000BASE-ZX SFP optical modules are also used in long-distance single-mode transmission applications, and the transmission distance can reach 70 km. If a 1000BASE-ZX SFP optical module is to be used in an application with a transmission distance much less than 70 km, an optical attenuator must be inserted into the link to prevent damage to the receiving end of the optical module due to excessive optical power.


6. 1000BASE BIDI SFP optical module


1000BASE BIDI SFP optical modules use simplex LC optical ports, which are generally used in single-mode transmission applications.


This optical module needs to be used in pairs. For example, a 1490nm/1310nm BIDI SFP optical module must be used in pairs with a 1310nm/1490nm BIDI SFP optical module. The following figure is the working principle of 1000BASE BIDI SFP optical module:


7. DWDM SFP optical module


DWDM SFP optical module is an indispensable component in DWDM network. It uses DWDM wavelength and has 40 common wavelength channels to choose from. It is a high-performance serial optical data transmission module.


8. CWDM SFP optical module


CWDM SFP optical module is an optical module using CWDM technology, its working wavelength is CWDM wavelength, and there are 18 wavelength channels to choose from.


Like conventional SFP optical modules, CWDM SFP optical modules are also a hot-swappable input/output (I/O) device used in the SFP interface of a switch or router.


The prices and uses of different SFP optical modules are different, and the same SFP optical modules produced by different manufacturers will also have huge differences in performance and price. Consumers should purchase SFP optical modules from the price, use, compatibility, brand and other aspects are considered comprehensively.
